What's an internal website and how can it help my company?

While most of us are very well aware of how much a website can grow a company because then customers can just look it up fairly easily. However, very few small businesses have yet to realize the value of internal websites, in particular for small businesses, like my own businesses. Here's a couple of examples how they can save everyone time and money, even without a business:

  1. You are at the grocery store shopping for you and your family. You can't remember how much milk is left at home or how which brand and type of bread and where the cheapest location is. The rest of the family is currently at an event and its up to you to make sure you get everything needed for supper without ruining your budget. What do you do? Pull out your smart phone and you login to your own private website that also has a spreadsheet laid out telling you exactly the amount have left, how much you need based on the recipe, and which store is cheapest and what payment/rewards methods/coupons are best to use.
  2. You are running a small shop, like an auto repair garage or small home made wood working things, or even a marijuana shop. Chances are fairly hair that you don't have memorized every little thing you have or need for your shop to run and succeed. You could spend hours each day just inventorying with paper and pencil or adjusting or eletronic record book...or using an internal website, the moment something is sold, inventory is adjusted with color coding via a stop light to more visually see what your out of, almost out or have plenty of. To extend this example slightly, lets say you also have staff under you. Last night was snow storm so you were expecting that your co-worker son could handle the garage because you thought it would be slow, however that happened to be the night it seemed like everyone wanted to put the plow on their trucks. Normally you'd just call up someone else to come help, or come help yourself and worry about overtime issues later, but now you can clearly see who is and isn't getting close to that time. Also you compare sales from one employee to the other which allows you to see better who is staying productive on the other side of things.

As you can see, it can be very handy to have an internal website, even if its just for your own personal needs. More sales to make more money is great, but its also great to lower your expenses and save valuable time...time is money, and this puts time and money back into your wallet! This is the area of web design I excell at but am very well rounded, including in pre internet methods.
